Okay, I admit it. I clean up before the housecleaner comes. My husband often wonders where the letter that he put on the counter has gone. He just put it there yesterday. Dishes in the sink…wash them. Socks on the floor…pick them up. I'm a neatnik.
This also applies to our yard. There's nothing like the day the landscaper comes and edges, mows, and blows everything into a tidy manicured haven. Am I right?
But wait a minute…am I missing something?
Sometimes our natural world is fine just as it is. Consider two things…dead trees and messy landscape beds.

Terrific Turkeys
The Eastern Wild Turkey can be found throughout the eastern United States including South Carolina and the ACE Basin. They prefer to live in mature pine and hardwood stands where they have protective cover and close to open, grassy clearings where they feed. As our community becomes more developed, access to open areas is reduced and may explain why we see them roaming in the streets! But it is important to know that the history of the turkey in Belfair predates our community's development. Starting in 1963 the area where we now live began operation as a domestic turkey farm!

Community Announcement
The Belfair Architectural Review Board has recently revised and updated their guidelines and regulations. These changes have been approved by the POA and may be found on the Belfair website. The first area we wish to highlight to the membership is: "Exterior Lighting".
Exterior lighting shall be installed so that neighboring properties and street traffic are unaffected by the glare. All exterior lighting requires ARB approval.
The design and location of all exterior lighting shall be indicated on the site plan and the landscape plan. Walkway, driveway and pole mounted luminaries shall be located a minimum of 20 feet from the street curb line. In addition, the property owner is advised that all elements including pole mounted luminaries that are installed in the utility easement (which is a 10-foot-wide easement located inside the front and side right-of-way or property line) are installed at the property owner's risk.
Surface mounted floodlights are not permitted.
Sconces and path lights are to be minimized but may be used to illuminate backyard areas for night-time use when integrated with landscape planting that obscures the post.
High efficiency exterior lighting such as light-emitting diode (LED) lighting or other high efficient equivalents are recommended. Exterior lights should have automatic photocell, motion or timer controls.
Night lighting, not limited to walkway and driveway illumination sources shall be subdued (low wattage), directed downward and where possible should be concealed into steps, walls, bollards, and handrails, whenever possible, to avoid direct view of light sources. Driveway and walkway lighting shall be located close to the ground. Cut sheets must be submitted for approval with the landscape plan for all exterior lighting.
Landscape lighting should also be subdued (low voltage and low wattage). If up-lighting is used, care should be taken to avoid creating a halo or glow in the night sky. Down-lighting should be focused on specific landscape vegetation should be subtle, subdued, hidden from view, and not used for general illumination purposes, as long as the lighting does not affect adjacent properties or the natural surrounding habitat.
Colored lighting is not allowed for home or landscape lighting.
Exterior electric lighting, including front/rear entry, garage, service yards or other exterior wall mounted fixtures containing leaded or frosted glass lenses are recommended. Bulb wattage should be kept to a minimum. A single fixture may not exceed 75 watts for incandescent or 1100 lumens for LED. The color temperature should not exceed 3,000 Kelvins. In some cases it may be necessary to reduce the wattage of individual bulbs to 25 or even 15 watts.
String Lighting may be used so long as it is only used for special events and not on a regular basis. If the lights get used too frequently and are deemed to be too bright, then the ARB may require removal.

Honors
Dear Members,
We are taking all necessary steps to assess the community following Hurricane Helene, but our top priority is your safety and that of our associates. As of this morning, we have trees and limbs down in several areas of the community, including Manchester Court, the outgoing lane of the East Gate, and Lexington. Access to the Bistro is currently limited, and Avenue of the Oaks will remain closed while we work to clear heavy debris. Our agronomy team is on-site assessing the community, and we have two tree service companies lined up to assist with clearing the fallen trees. Please note that contractors will not be allowed into the community until after noon today to ensure safe access.
Associates will experience delays coming in this morning, and as a result, there will be a delayed opening of all venues until employees can safely arrive. Winds are expected to subside between 11am and 12pm, which will help us make progress. The 1811 Grille will be closed for lunch, but we are targeting a dinner service opening later today. Additionally, please be aware that fitness classes are canceled for this morning, but our Immunization Day will still go ahead as planned.
If you need any assistance, please reach out to myself directly at [email protected], and I will help coordinate.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time. Stay safe, and we will continue to keep you updated.
Best regards,
Mitchell Laskowitz General Manager
Hurricane Preparedness
Belfair's management and staff are committed to providing a comprehensive Disaster Recovery Plan, which will serve to protect and/or mitigate damage to members' homes and the POA's assets, in the event of a hurricane. To that end, Belfair has revised its Right-of-Entry agreement, a document that is a part of Belfair's Disaster Recovery Plan.
We are saddened to share the news that Johnnie, a long-time driver for Belfair's waste service (American Pride/ProDisposal/Coastal Waste & Recycling), has passed away. Is your Game in a Slump?
A "slump" is defined as a prolonged period when performance is declining. Some golfers define a slump as several bad rounds in a row, and others may think they are in a slump when their scoring average has increased significantly over time.

Bluffton / Hilton Head
Bluffton is a low-country town in Beaufort County, South Carolina, and one of the fastest growing municipalities in the state. It’s often called the "the last true coastal village of the South." And yet, it is home to some of the most well-developed, and modern communities in South Carolina. The elegant Old Town district and stunning views of the May River are a delight and make life at Bluffton charming.
The story of Belfair begins in 1811, when the husband and wife duo of William Telfair and Betsey Bellinger established a country estate and working plantation devoted to agriculture. They took the first part of "Bellinger" and the last of "Telfair" to name their new majestic country estate. Over the years the estate has operated as a cattle ranch and even a turkey farm for periods of time and in 1994, the estate began the transformation into a world-class community.
1811 Grille
Belfair's à la carte dining room with the "Cheers Like" atmosphere gives a casual pub feel, where everyone knows your name. Members enjoy traditional menu items like chicken scallopini, luxury foods such as foie gras, and club favorite - fresh oysters.

We had the experience of a lifetime hosting our daughter Brittany's wedding in our Belfair Community on 6.10.17. The venue, food, staff, cottages for wedding party, golf scramble, fire-works display, band, and unbelievable support of the community made the event spectacular. We're so pleased we chose to live in Belfair and have our daughter's wedding here. Thank you to the entire staff and community that made the event so memorable.
Testimonial 2
Loved Belfair! The setting is absolutely gorgeous, the staff very professional and helpful, and the food was delicious! Everyone kept commenting on how beautiful the wedding was and we barely added anything extra to the existing decor. They worked within our budget for the reception and everything turned out perfectly. I would definitely recommend them for any event.

The Belfair 1811 Charitable Fund sponsors a series of events that offer Belfair members the opportunity to participate in activities that raise philanthropic funds for the greater Bluffton community.
The signature event is the BCF Golf Tournament and Auction held each fall. The golf tournament and silent auction raised more than $70,00 in 2019. BCF accepts donations from Belfair members throughout the year. During the annual "Season of Thanks Campaign" each December, BCF urges Belfair members to reflect upon their good fortune and share with Low Country neighbors in need. In 2019, more than 180 Belfair families contributed to BCF.
The scope of BCF's philanthropy is wide ranging. Among the services we support are aid to homeless families, food supplements, literacy instructions, counseling for rape and child abuse survivors, autistic caregiver assistance, outreach to the elderly, critical legal services and medical supplies.
